Application Requirements

The Duke Kunshan Admissions team takes a holistic approach when reviewing applications. This means that all application requirements are taken into consideration, ensuring the most suitable candidates are admitted on the strength of their application as a whole. International students may submit SAT or ACT scores, IB diploma or 3 IB higher-level exam scores if student is not an IB diploma candidate, or 3 AP exam scores. Applicants who have not taken standardized international tests can submit other independently administered national examinations to be considered in the overall context of their application.

All applications for Duke Kunshan University are done using the Common Application. Students applying to Duke University can also check a box to be considered for admission to Duke Kunshan University.

Qualities we look for in a successful candidate include:

- High academic credentials and passion for learning

A successful candidate demonstrates their academic achievements through their school transcripts as well as their SAT, ACT or equivalent test scores. There are no minimum requirements for test scores, an applicant’s academic performance will be considered in the context of their application. We are looking for students who push themselves in the classroom AND outside the classroom, demonstrate well-roundedness, and want to make the most of their four years in the Duke Kunshan learning environment. Students who appreciate that learning takes place through engagement in a variety of settings and activities.

- Strong English language competency

The admissions committee will be able to assess an applicant's writing abilities through their materials, and ultimately their speaking and listening through an interview (either on-site or online video interview). For non-native English speakers, TOEFL and IELTS test scores may be submitted with an application for consideration, but are not mandatory.

- Strong interest in Duke Kunshan's innovative, integrated and interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum

We are looking for students who want to be a part of a unique educational experience and embrace the opportunity to learn in an interdisciplinary and global learning environment. This should be reflected in the student’s essays that are submitted as part of the application.

- An 'adventurous' spirit and creative thinking orientation

Studying in a different country requires the student to have an open-mind and adventurous spirit. This will require adaptability, tolerance and a genuine curiosity towards other cultures. Applicants must demonstrate an eagerness to interact with people from diverse backgrounds. Students at Duke Kunshan University will embrace learning from their classmates while sharing their own unique perspective, enriching our learning community and broadening their horizons in the process. 

- A demonstrated desire to have an impact and succeed in life

We want students with a desire to have an impact in a way that is meaningful to them.  We take great pride in the accomplishments of our students. Through their engagement in our various extracurricular, co-curricular and service learning offerings, our students will be able to apply what they learn in the classroom and grow personally as a result. We want students that will be fully engaged in their educational experience, bring value to the Duke Kunshan and broader community and ultimately their future organizations.

- Excited at the unique leadership opportunity being a member of the inaugural class provides

Students in the inaugural class will have a special opportunity to develop their leadership skills. These students will be the leaders of Duke Kunshan’s student organizations for four years. They will start clubs and initiatives when they see a need, and work closely with the administration, helping to establish our culture and community, and leave a legacy. Students in the Class of 2022 will develop the leadership skills that will set them apart from their peers whether applying to graduate school or pursuing their professional careers upon graduation.
